Sophie sat in the sand, the afternoon sun beaming down on her as small waves lapped up just to where she was sitting. She was perfecting her surprisingly large sandcastle, glad that high tide had already passed.

Joey walked along the beach, dragging his feet through the water. He nodded hello as he passed a girl building a sand castle, pausing to look at it.

"Hellow." Sophie said to the boy behind her. She patted one of the turrets to smooth it out, seeing the little flecks of sand shimmer as the fell from their high perch on top of the castle.

"Thats a work of art that is." Joey said astounded at the size and intricacy of the castle. He assumed it would have required a vast amount of patience. And it would be gone tomorrow. He couldn't fathom how someone could spend so much effort on something that would be destroyed within 24 hours. "How long has that taken you?"

"Not as long as you'd think." Sophie said, her words slightly disjointed as she concentrated. "But its so pretty." she said dreamily. "I want to live in it."

"It is very pretty."Joey said getting down on his knees next to her to examine it more closely. It had been carved out and designed down to a tee. "Thats amazing." he said still in slight disbelief. "And no magic?"

"No magic." Sophie assured him. "That would be cheating." she carved out a bit of vine going up the side of a tower. "Used to make these when I was a kid, before I knew I was a witch." she said still focusing intently on the vine. "We used to live down by the shore."

Joey watched, transfixed in his spot by the perfection of every little detail. "Well it payed off, this is unbelievable." He tore his eyes away from the castle to look at her, and became just as hypnotized by her as her work.

Sophie became self-consciously aware of his gaze and tried to maintain her concentration. "Would you like to help?" she asked, trying to let his eyes wander again.

Joey shook his head. "Uh yea sure," he said suddenly. "But, well i'm not very good. I was always in the water when I was little."

"Thats okay." Sophie said indifferently. "It'll be nice to have the company," she continued to perfect her tower feeling like a little kid again. "You lived near the beach too?" she asked after a few moments of silence.

"Yea, Hattaras." Joey said starting to get into it. "I used to surf, don't know if I can do it anymore though."

"Really?!" Sophie said excited. "I used to watch the surfers and want to do it. My parents wouldn't let me though. So I made sand castles instead." she sighed. "Could you teach me?"

Joey laughed. "Yea sure." he said as he knocked a bit too much of the tip of a tower off. "..oops. It'll probably come back to me once i get on the water. Haven't really been in since I was a kid.."

Sophie positively squeeked with excitement. "Oh Joey i'm so excited now." she said clapping her hands together, feeling even more childish. She flung her arms around his neck and hugged him. "Thank you." she said beaming.
