Here are the areas of magical study here at Knockwood:
Curses, Hexes and Dark Rituals: Learn the more questionable arts in these classes. Instructor covers the Dark Arts and how to defend against them, but also teaches how they are performed, on the grounds that one cannot truly fight what one doesn’t understand. Resembles a point-counterpoint between Dark Arts and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Demonology: Students learn about specific types of demons and other elemental spirits, including their origin, nature, powers, and so on. Material covers summoning, control, use, and banishment of demons and other spirits. Also includes some study of the lighter forces and how to use them as well, especially in the fighting of demons.
Charms and Enchantments: A wide range of classes covering all sorts of Charms and Spellwork. Class material arranged by level and function.
Alchemy: The study of Transfiguration. Students will learn a number of spells and processes, as well as the concepts behind spells, including Transfiguring the self, animate and inanimate objects, linking spells, switching spells, and those pursuing becoming Animagi.
Potions: Students will learn the theory of Potions, how to make them, the properties of ingredients, their use, and their relation to other curricula, particularly Herbology and Alchemy.
Multi-Cultural Magical Studies: A wide-ranging look at the different magical cultures and their history, as well as worldwide practicing of magic. Includes study of such magics as originated in ancient Rome and Greece, Norse and Celtic traditions, Eastern magics, African and tribal magics, the lore and practices of the Mayans, Incans, and tribal societies of the lower Americas. Students will learn how to perform and practice other techniques in magic from all of these societies. Advanced projects may include studying and integrating these techniques to discover newer and better ways of achieving desired results.
Advanced Divination: Overview of Divination theory with a heavy emphasis on ability and practice. Looks at the many techniques from around the wizarding world for divining the future, clairvoyance, and discerning the past. Includes divinatory techniques and an understanding of which methods best suit which purposes, Arithmancy and charts, and Astronomy and astrology.
Native American Studies: Students learn the practices native to this continent, understanding the influence of these traditions on the modern American magical practice and how it differs from the European composition of spells and magic. Includes history and belief as well as practical theory. Relating concepts and knowledge to various subject areas including Herbology, Charms, and Divination.
Shaman Studies: Care of Magical Creatures and the magical purposes of Muggle beasts as well. Advanced studies are available for students who wish to pursue a career as a shaman. Students will learn the nature and purpose of magical beasts. Wizarding function and magical properties of ordinary beasts such as owls and cats are also covered.
Herbology: The study of plants, both magical and mundane, their cultivation, refinement, and usage. Students will grow and adapt a number of flora, harvest and prepare them, and show an understanding of their purpose. Includes integration in particular with Potions. Also covers stones and other earth-related magic.
